Each Year CACC Recognizes Outstanding Individuals Through Scholarships & Awards

SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year the Capital Area Council of Churches honors students with the following scholarships:

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Scholarship: You may now apply for this scholarship online or via scholarship application forms available here in [PDF] or [Microsoft WORD] format. You may also obtain an application from the Capital Area Council of Churches office and through high school guidance offices.

This scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors who live or attend school in, or are part of a CACC faith community in the CACC service area. Applicants must:

  • live, worship, or attend school in Albany or southern Rensselaer County;
  • be active in their school and faith community;
  • understand and plan to apply the teachings of Dr. King;
  • show evidence of academic potential and financial need; and
  • be accepted at an accredited college/university.

Completed applications, along with all supporting documents are due at the CACC office by March 31st annually.

Hogancamp Seminary Scholarship: Thanks to the generosity of the late Grace Hogancamp, the Council has some modest funds available to be used as scholarships for seminary students. These students must also belong to a CACC member congregation and accepted or enrolled in a Protestant theological seminary. Applicants must be:

  • members of a member congregation of the CACC; and
  • enrolled in or accepted at a Protestant theological seminary.

Application forms are available from the CACC office (462-5450). Completed applications, which must be accompanied by a recent transcript, an essay describing the applicant’s call to ministry, and a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s pastor, are due MAY 1st annually.

AWARDS

Rev. Dr. Caryle Adams Ecumenical/ Interfaith Award: Each year, the Capital Area Council of Churches presents an award named for the Reverend Dr. Carlyle Adams. The award is presented at the Fall Assembly to a person who:

  • has worked to bring the message of unity;
  • exemplifies the inclusive spirit of Dr. Adams; and
  • has been involved in some ecumenical or interfaith program or project.

James and Pearl Campbell Peace and Justice Award: The James and Pearl Campbell Peace and Justice Award is presented at the Capital Area Council of Churches, Spring Assembly to a person who in his/her life’s work has shown to be a friend of peace and justice, as were the Campbells. Honoree need not be a member of the Council, but must be active in the CACC service area, which includes Albany County and southern Rensselaer County.

Rev. Joyce Steinkraus Giles Pastoral Service Award: Each year at their Annual Assembly, the Capital Area Council of Churches presents an award named for the late Rev. Joyce Steinkraus Giles, who served the CACC as Executive Director from 1977-1986. To be eligible, a pastor must:

  • actively participate in the Council of one of its programs
  • have done outstanding pastoral ministry
  • exemplify racial, gender, and denominational inclusiveness

To nominate a pastor, send a letter to our office telling why you think this pastor deserves the award. Be sure to include the name and phone number of his/her church.

Awards are now presented at a Fall Awards Celebration.
